What Is Accelerated Braces Treatment?
Accelerated braces treatment offers all of the benefits of orthodontics in a much shorter time frame.
This process isnβt just about applying more orthodontic force and pressure to the tooth, but about specialized techniques that encourage faster root movement in a safe way. Itβs not uncommon for people with braces to believe that wearing more rubber bands will move their teeth faster, and finish their orthodontic treatment more quickly, but this isnβt the case. In fact, it can even be unsafe to wear more rubber bands than indicated. Thankfully, there is a better way to get quicker results with orthodontic treatment. These new methods are called Accelerated braces treatment.

There are a few different ways to speed up
braces treatment and tooth movement.
The ones we offer rely on whatβs called regional acceleratory phenomenon. In simple English, this just means that there are safe methods your orthodontist can use to initiate tooth movement so that your orthodontic treatment progresses more quickly.
When pressure is applied steadily to a tooth, either through traditional bracket-and-wire braces or via any other method, a complex biological process begins within the bone of the jaw surrounding that toothβs root. On the side where pressure is applied, that bone tissue will respond with cells called osteoclasts, which are responsible for breaking down and restructuring bone tissue at the cellular level. This breakdown allows for the tooth to move into the newly-created space.
While this happens, the other side responds by developing cells called osteoblasts, which are responsible for shaping new bone to fill the space. Between this push-and-pull, destruction and generation, the root of the tooth can move over steadily as a result of our bodyβs natural response to steady orthodontic pressure.
Accelerated braces treatment speeds this cell creation and destruction process through several methods, allowing for faster bone remodeling, and faster results for you!

Which Accelerated Orthodontic
Treatment Options are Available?
In our office, we currently offer two accelerated orthodontic treatment options: Acceledent, and Propel. Depending on your individual treatment goals, accelerated orthodontic treatment might be a good choice for you.
Acceledent
Acceledent is a small device that can accelerate tooth movement by applying a vibratory force to the teeth, via a bite plate. When used a short amount of time every day, the vibrations create a stronger response between these cells as the bone is reshaped.
Propel
Propel uses a series of micro-osteoperforations to create more movement in the bone surrounding the root of the tooth. Micro (small) osteo (bone) perforations (hole) means exactly what it sounds like: very tiny holes are drilled into the bone, which puts a small amount of inflammatory stress response surrounding the root of the tooth. This response is what triggers that regional acceleratory phenomenon, speeding up tooth movement as the body responds rapidly to heal and reshape that bone.Β
